History of Carrera Sunglasses

Today we have Carrera under the spotlight. One of the most loved sunglass brands in the world, Carrera was founded way back in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger as sports eyewear manufacturer Wilhelm Anger Werker, in Austria. Carrera as we know it was born in 1974, when it was renamed to Carrera International. This is was after a successful run over the years, with the noteworthy ‘Optyl’ invention by the company. Optyl was a revolutionary plastic like material which was far more durable and light than what was used in lenses back then.

In 1974, Carrera also partnered with automobile designer Ferdinand Alexander to develop the Porsche-Carrera Sunglass collection. Coincidentally, both the car series and the sunglass brand were named after the same thing, a race called the ‘Carrera Panamerica’. Known as one of the most dangerous races of all time, it ran from 1950 to 1954, and is now resurrected as a classic road rally. In 1996, Carrera was bought by Italian company Safilo Group S.p.A., and has remained a subsidiary since.
